Dr. Charles R. Szyman, a distinguished physician whose life took an unfortunate turn, left behind a legacy of both medical excellence and the harsh reality of a flawed justice system.
Born on February 27, 1951, in Chicago to Robert R. and Mary Pat Szyman, he embarked on a journey that would lead him to become a pillar of his community, a healer, and, ultimately, a victim of unjust accusations. Charles zealously pursued his education after graduating from Mount Carmel High School in Chicago in 1969. He attended Chicago State University and later earned his place in medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
His dedication to his studies was only matched by his commitment to public service, as exemplified by his service in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Corpsman 3rd Class from 1971 to 1973. Dr. Szyman’s passion for medicine and compassion for his patients led him to excel as an anesthesiologist and pain specialist at Holy Family Memorial in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
THE SZYMAN INDICTMENT
For 26 years, he diligently cared for his patients, and his contributions went beyond the medical field. He co-founded the Holy Family Memorial Sleep Clinic, a testament to his dedication to improving the lives of those he served. However, his life was tragic when he was accused of over-prescribing narcotic medications.
In June 2016, he was indicted on 19 counts of drug trafficking, allegations that rocked both his personal and professional life. The trial that followed was a rollercoaster of emotions as Dr. Szyman fought to prove his innocence against a justice system that seemed bent on portraying him as a criminal.
WHEN COPS, COURTS, AND PROSECUTORS PRACTICE MEDICINE, THOUSANDS HAVE PERISHED
The trial lasted only five days. On the side of evil stood Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Jacobs and Laura Schulteis Kwaterski. In his closing, Mr.Jacobs said that Dr. Szyman failed in his duty to protect his patients when he prescribed them ever-increasing doses of narcotics without understanding the source of the patient’s pain and properly monitoring their use. Really?
And where is your medical degree, Mr. Jacobs? And how do you come up with such lies and sleep at night? Oh—that’s right—it’s the money. Beau Brindley did what every defense attorney should do. He pointed out that the government’s case was not about medical malpractice, not about negligence, but was a criminal case.
” People don’t realize what pain patients are going through! They are huge victims of the so-called opioid crisis and are being punished and treated like criminals, and so are the doctors who want to help but are being told what and how much they can prescribe by politicians!
They also fear losing their license if they prescribe pain meds. It’s a huge injustice. To be clear, I am talking about cancer patients, trauma patients, and chronic pain patients with genetic syndromes that they were born with, and then there’s depression because they truly suffer due to all these laws. What they are doing is inexcusable!”
“They are not calling Charles Szyman a doctor, they are calling him a criminal,” Brindley said. This is a point that every defense attorney in the country should be bringing home to the juries—that a doctor working in his office treating pain is not criminal.

According to Szyman, he had no indication some of his patients were lying to him to obtain ever-increasing amounts of narcotics. He said he always believed he was prescribing medication for a “legitimate medical purpose” and to prescribe medication without a purpose was unethical.
KING’S VIEWS THAT “ALL CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS AND THEIR DOCTORS ARE SUB-HUMANS”
The prosecution’s evil PAID TO LIE “expert” witness was Dr. Timothy King, a pain specialist and anesthesiologist from Indianapolis. Stay away from him as a doctor. As usual, though, his testimony about Dr. Szyman’s patients was limited to the information in their medical files. He looked at several patients who were on high doses of opioids due to years of treatment and the usual opioid tolerance and called the amounts “egregious”.
I remember that term being used by the lying expert witness in my case as well, Dr. Marc Swanson of Roanoke, VA. I guess this 4 dollar word is something they learn in the “How to Lie 101” class for prosecutorial expert witnessing.

The prosecution also used the testimony from two DEA agents, Greg Connor and Kelsey Knaup, who obtained prescriptions from Dr. Szyman fraudulently. They are the REAL criminals. They complained about pain they didn’t really have, and Dr. Szyman believed them and treated them appropriately for the pain they described.
In court at the 2017 Szyman trial, King said the following:
“Basically, we’re looking to see if we’ve got that gold standard.
Has the pain improved? Is the quality of life — that’s “QOL” — the quality of life improved? Is function improved? Function is the gold standard. Is there any indication that actionable, meaningful, objective function is improved?”

King falsely claims that his unproven and personal standards are the unquestioned standard of care for opioid pain management. In fact, King has a patent that he claims can determine if a prescriber has violated the Controlled Substances Act.
Undoubtedly, King has used his flawed patent to help convict other doctors. This is not how chronic disease is treated for conditions such as DM, HTN, depression, etc. If the patient is stable, they’re generally kept on the same medications for a condition that is not expected to improve.
Mr. Thompson told the jury “There are two things about this case that are true. The first is that Charles Szyman is a physician … the second is that Charles Szyman did his job.”

In the last 40 years, the US has spent over $2.5 trillion dollars on the Drug War. An Evaluation Based on 111 Years of Experience: concludes that drug use has not been significantly affected.
They interdict less than 1% of drugs and they are really only effective at arresting pain doctors and leaving patients without any treatment options. Suicides and the black market or torture.

Clement vs. the Drug Enforcement Administration, we are witnessing an open challenge to the non-medical authority of the DEA to issue guidelines that constitute advice relating to the general practice of medicine or to create new laws and regulations about the treatment of pain.

I have sent repeated pleas to my senators and congresswoman to do whatever they can to get a congressional hearing opened into the DEA and their so called “War on Opiates.” I have cited the statistics. I have begged them after being abandoned by my own doctor during post-op and going into CRPS crisis and being suicidal after having my own medications cut in half with no reason or recourse. NO ACTION has been taken. I have heard nothing but canned answers or crickets. Received newsletters or phone calls with “I’m so sorry you are going through this.” Still no action.
They are more preoccupied with the election, the wrongs done to their political comrades than the millions of suffering Americans under their watch. That was obvious by the very fact it wasn’t even mentioned in a bypassing COMMENT at the Republican Debate!
My heart is breaking because it is obvious that Congress is complicit in this genocidal attack on the most protected group of Americans ever. From veterans to the rare disease afflicted in this country, we have become literal chattel beneath the country’s feet. Ignored, cast aside, and left to die… too expensive to be bothered with and not important enough to listen to.
