Dr. Forrest Tennant was the first—and only—doctor who was able to finally understand what had happened to me and explain the devastating symptoms I had been experiencing since I was 19 years old. He was the doctor who confirmed my diagnoses of Adhesive Arachnoiditis and CRPS after I had spent 16 months being passed from doctor to doctor and specialist to specialist without answers. I was only 19 when I walked into the hospital after fainting from dehydration and suffering from a severe concussion migraine. I never could have imagined that I would leave the hospital five days later in a wheelchair, unable to walk because of partial paralysis and severe weakness in my legs. During my hospitalization, I underwent two lumbar puncture attempts by an ER doctor. I immediately experienced unusual and severe symptoms during and after the procedures, but despite repeatedly seeking help, no one could explain what had happened to me. Months later, a neurologist performed a nerve block in an attempt to help my pain, but it did not help and, in my experience, only added to the injury and worsening of my symptoms. For months, I could barely walk without a walker or wheelchair. I was living with severe, relentless pain and a long list of frightening symptoms, yet no doctor could explain why this was happening to someone who had been young and healthy before the lumbar punctures. Then I found Dr. Tennant. At only 20 years old, I finally had a doctor who listened to me, connected the pieces, and recognized what so many others had missed. He helped me understand that my symptoms were consistent with Adhesive Arachnoiditis and CRPS and gave me answers when I had been searching for them for more than a year. In many ways, Dr. Tennant saved my life. Without him, I don’t know if I ever would have understood what had happened to me or why I was suffering so terribly. More importantly, he gave me hope and helped me learn how to live as comfortably as possible with an injury that had developed into intractable chronic pain. I will be forever grateful that I had the opportunity to know him—not only as my doctor, but as someone who genuinely cared about people like me. His research, protocols, compassion, and dedication to patients with Adhesive Arachnoiditis will never be forgotten. Dr. Tennant, thank you for everything you did for me and for so many others. I will continue talking about your work, sharing your research, and keeping your legacy alive. I hope that one day, more doctors will carry forward the work you devoted your life to and continue searching for better answers and treatments for those living with this devastating condition. You will forever be missed by me, the Adhesive Arachnoiditis community, and countless patients whose lives you touched. I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to call you my doctor. IP Patient from Canada Dr Tennant was kind enough to help and support me freely to pursue AA diagnosis (this was our last interaction and im soon to get the MRI) and consider many new treatments for my EDS + CRPS. It was clear immediately that Dr. Tennant actually cared about my well-being and functioning capabilities as a human in our interactions. To add, Dr Tennant was the only Dr in who I feel could truly understand the pain, urgency, and brutality intractable pain puts you in, he had a deep compassion like nobody I’ve seen before or after.
