“the doctor who would not look away”
Dr. Forest Tennant (MD, DrPH) was a pioneering physician who dedicated his 50-year career to patients mainstream medicine had largely abandoned. With a background in public health and addiction medicine, he earned the reputation of “the doctor who would not look away” by validating and treating those suffering from the most severe, excruciating chronic conditions.
His medical and humanitarian legacy is defined by several key areas:

Redefining Intractable Pain as a Disease
Dr. Tennant revolutionized how severe pain is understood. He argued that intractable pain syndrome (IPS) is not merely a subjective symptom, but a highly destructive, systemic disease. He demonstrated that constant, severe pain physically ravages the human body—collapsing hormones, straining the cardiovascular system, and actively shortening a patient’s life expectancy.

Uncovering the Fire of Neuroinflammation
He identified the biological driver of this suffering as neuroinflammation—a literal fire deep within the brain and spinal cord. In patients with IPS, immune cells in the nervous system switch on and never switch off, burning through the very wiring meant to control pain. He used this science to validate complex, poorly understood conditions that other doctors dismissed as psychological, including:
- Adhesive Arachnoiditis: A painful condition where the nerves at the base of the spine are glued together by scar tissue and inflammation.
- Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS): A genetic connective tissue disorder.
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS): A severe chronic pain condition often referred to as the “suicide disease.”
To treat these conditions, he developed his Three-Component Protocol—controlling pain, calming neuroinflammation, and healing damaged tissue—designed to extinguish the active disease process rather than just masking symptoms. In his final years, he also linked progressive autoimmunity to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), demonstrating that this clinical decline could be halted.

The 2017 DEA Raid and Vindication
At 76 years old, Dr. Tennant’s life and practice were upended on November 15, 2017, when two dozen armed federal agents raided his clinic, home, and foundation. Despite the public spectacle, the DEA’s 18-month investigation yielded no charges or indictments, and the case was closed.

More than 200 physicians stepped forward to vouch for his clinical integrity. While entirely vindicated, the toll of the raid forced the closure of his clinic, leaving his fragile patients without care overnight—a sudden disruption that some patients tragically did not survive.

The “Lighthouse” Legacy
Refusing to abandon his purpose, Dr. Tennant spent his remaining years turning his foundation into a scientific “lighthouse” for abandoned patients. He wrote affordable handbooks to guide other doctors and patients, personally answered letters of distress, and hosted weekly Thursday night support video calls with patients nationwide. He kept hosting these support calls right up until his death, even running them from his hospital bed with his wife, Miriam, by his side.

Dr. Tennant’s life represents a tireless battle to give scientific visibility to invisible physical suffering, leaving behind a blueprint for compassionate, specialized neurological care.

Thank you for always having a willingness to go against mainstream theory. Medical history will prove him right. But, most importantly, to his wife of many years, I know that you may have been a major driving force in his life. Truly, very sorry for your loss

There’s no words that can ever explain the impact he had on others and the life long effects that will be carried afterwards.

Dr T, you are a hero to so many of us. You diagnosed me in 2018 and then my little girl Daisy-Jayne very recently, only at the end of June this year. We are so very grateful for you. Sending so much love to your wonderful wife Miriam and to everyone else who loves you and feels your loss. Thank you for everything. Leah and Daisy-Jayne ❤️

Dr. Tennent helped me many years ago when diagnosed me with Adhesive Arachnoiditis after 4 surgeries on my spine. My doctors wouldn’t put a name on it, they just said scar tissue, but Dr. Tennent knew exactly what it was and what I needed. I’ve had it since 1987 and Dr. Tennent and I have corresponded about it long distance, I live in Maryland. I am so grateful to the Doctor and all my prayers and good wishes go to his wife and family. I am deeply moved by his passing. Godspeed my understanding friend and Thank You.

Dr. Tennant confirmed my self-diagnosis when other doctors denied it, and gave me my life back. What greater gift is there. I miss him every day, and will remember him and Miriam in my prayers. Miriam, thank you for sharing your husband with so many people. Marianne Jordan rnpilot@mac.com

I Love Doctor Tennant with all my heart. He rescued from a life of pain so severe that I begged God to let me die every day. When I first entered his West Covina Clinic I could not even stand or sit so I would lay on the floor. He was so inquisitive and he always had something else to try. That was years before he developed his three part protocol and I knew that someday he would one day find a cure for my adhesive arachnoiditis. He always had something to learn about his patients for example one day when I showed up for my appointment another doctor was there to draw blood.
Dr Tennant tested his patients on higher doses to find out why. The Tennent foundation paid for this very expensive test. That’s when I learned out that I had a CYP450-2C9 defect or in plain english that I was a ultra rapid metabolizer of opioids. I had a recent conversation with Forest and he told me at the time of the raid he had a least 108 patients in that category. Patients like this kill themselves when they when they lose pain control. A few weeks before the raid I once again flew into California and the morning of my appointment Dr Tennant called while I was still at the motel and asked if I would mind getting interviewed. Dr Tennant was always open to what he was doing at the clinic and so Jennifer Adams, my wife and I got interviewed. When it was time for me to see Dr Tennant these two big broad shouldered camera men followed Kathy and I into the little treatment room to film everything that happened. After that things got kind of weird. Kathy and I with our backs to the wall on one side of the desk and Doctor Tennant on the side of the desk with his back to the wall and these two big camera men. I was thinking why are they filming this? What about HIPPA? Then I looked down to their shoes. They were wearing BLACK shoes…. Did I mention how big they were? And all they were interested in filming… they were both bent over the desk to film Doctor Tennant filling out and signing my prescription. After my appointment I went outside in front of the clinic the camera men asked my if I had anything else I wanted to add. I told the camera , I told the world that I was a CYP450-2C9 defect which means I have a duplicate gene that was turned on that made my body rapidly metabolize opioids, that in addition to that I had one of this world’s most painful incurable diseases called adhesive arachnoiditis a rare disease that made as I had testified at a 2014 FDA hearing to pain beyond all human understanding or comprehension. I begged the camera..the world… to let me live, that doctors were getting harder and harder to find because of the DEA. Please… Please Let me live. A few weeks later Dr Tennants home and Clinic were raided
I know that this is getting long but the Kaiser Permanente doctor who reviewed Dr Tennant’s said that we were drug dealers. Why? Because the doses we were being prescribed would overdose the average patient and we were still alive. That we were alive was proof we were drug dealers and must be selling our meds. Don’t you agree with me that raid should be scrubbed from Dr Tennants sterling record?
