You are so right, my friend. The new robotic doctors and nps are uncaring because they know I have been outspoken about the truth. I have lived 65 years, and I know for a fact that there were never large amounts of legal opioids on the street. I kept my finger on the pulse of many aspects of this situation because years ago I became intent upon watching what the dirty corrupt DEA would try next. I tried to explain to a NP who was good and kind too, we had long visits just catching up on each others lives. When the guidelines began to be read and papers signed, she saw no danger. I asked her why she was not worried. She kind of laughed it off but began pulling patients in every week and a half for pill counts. I told her she needed to be watchful because there was danger to us all ahead once these guidelines became laws. She did not seem to believe me. But later she ended up leaving to join the hospital based neurology department. My life has been hell since then. Everybody in my state that I have contacted (pain management providers) are expected to enforce the arbitrary and archaic 90mme. All of them. So they follow the rules and stay in line. What does this say about them? We fight to free them from tyranny but they do not fight for us. Wtf?? I can connect with their fear of course, given the unfair and corrupt nature of persecuting the good doctors. But I see no humanity in the newer docs. No compassion. They resemble AI bots. This is beyond frightening but I grew up with an amazing family doctor. So as you often say, in the spirit of my family doctor of many years, who frequently had the balls to tell the govt to f*ck off and leave him alone to practice as he saw fit, I honor that big Irish red haired Clydesdale horse raising independent spirit, I honor him and grieve him. I grieve for the care we once had reason to expect to continue. This man was a hero. Today I mostly deal with sheep or robots. And in the place where my spirit lives, I imagine what he might say today and can hear my mother’s laughter before he closed his office and told her this “Minnie, I’ll be god-damned if I let the govt tell me how to run my practice after all these years”. This because in 92, they told him to computerize or close. He became a travelling doc. It was our loss but we moved on knowing he was right. Today, he would have formed a group of docs with him at the helm, booming voice and a big cigar nobody on the hospital board ever dared ask him to put out. Today, I know this: He’d have told it like it was to any govt entity and fought for his patients. He is gone now but would be so angry and disappointed, for his patients. He believed in relieving suffering. I write this lame tribute in honor of Avon Flaniken MD, the biggest most impressive doctor around back when compassion won the day over robotic paranoia and govt overreach and corruption. May he be giving the dead from the alphabet mafia hell instead of resting in peace. He would have liked it that way. I miss you, Doc. We all loved you, and we will forever miss your loving care. I can’t say anymore.
