Doctor Sentenced To 12.5 Years In Prison For Illegally Distributing Oxycodone From Midtown Manhattan Practice
On February 13, 2023, Adelglass’s Former Office Manager, Marcello Sansone, was Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison. Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced that HOWARD ADELGLASS was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff to 150 months in prison for his participation in a conspiracy to prescribe oxycodone illegally.
ADELGLASS ILLEGALY PRESCRIBED ENORMOUS QUANTITIES
U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “For years, Howard Adelglass illegally prescribed enormous quantities of highly addictive and deadly opioids to people he knew were suffering from substance abuse disorders or were dealers. By monetizing his prescription pad and distributing mammoth quantities of oxycodone pills for no legitimate medical purpose, Adelglass practiced as a drug dealer, not a doctor.
Adelglass did not simply betray his medical oath; he destroyed lives and families and helped fuel the opioid epidemic gripping the nation. Today’s sentence makes clear that this Office and our law enforcement partners will work tirelessly to hold responsible those who have contributed to the national opioid crisis no matter their professional stature.”
According to the allegations in the Indictment, he operated a pain-management clinic in Midtown Manhattan (the “Clinic”) together with his office manager, MARCELLO SANSONE.
The Clinic serviced purported patients seeking oxycodone and other pain-relief medications commonly diverted for illicit purposes. In exchange for cash payments, sex acts, and cocaine, ADELGLASS wrote thousands of prescriptions for large quantities of oxycodone, many to individuals whom ADELGLASS knew did not need the pills for a legitimate medical purpose.
When they occurred, ADELGLASS’s examinations were perfunctory. ADELGLASS’s purported patients included individuals addicted to opioids and, in some cases, individuals who sold oxycodone on the street.
Even when faced with clear evidence of his purported patients’ drug abuse and diversion, ADELGLASS continued to prescribe large quantities of oxycodone without a legitimate medical purpose and outside the scope of professional practice.

However, this extreme dedication to opioid accounting accuracy does not apply to the government. It turns out that while the U.S. government was locking up over a thousand doctors for practicing medicine in a way the DEA didn’t like, the most blatant criminal prescribing was happening under its direct control.
PROVIGIL (MODAFINAL) AND AMBIEN (ZOLIPIDEM)
According to Reuters, the White House Medical Unit did not comply with federal guidelines as it doled controlled medications like candy stores. Noting, 100,000 mg of Provigil was dispensed (without prescriptions) while requiring serious amounts of Ambien to sleep again.
It turns out that from 2017 to 2019, as the federal government was trumpeting its dedication to the war on drugs, the White House spent $98,000 on Provigil. This stimulant keeps a person awake in places like courtrooms or appearing before large audiences and another $46,500 on Ambien.
More importantly, as this Nation has come to understand, as most rock stars know if you use an upper to keep going, you’ll need a downer to get some sleep later (providing your medical staff administers the proper sequences of medications accordingly).

We can certainly understand why the twenty-four-hour White House schedule might leave the staff needing these, but they went name-brand instead of generic, which would have saved a lot of money.
However, it turns out that while American citizens and physicians were being targeted for daring to need or prescribe pain medications, those in power had access to an unlimited supply of fentanyl, oxycodone, morphine, and hydrocodone. Not only was this done without valid prescriptions or records but, in many cases, without annotation of who was getting the medication.
The White House Medical Unit was found to have severe and systemic problems that had been overlooked by senior leaders, allowing ineffective controls and compliance to become standard operating procedures, “increasing the risk of diversion of controlled substances.”
The OIG found that, except for the White House Medical Unit, all executive medical clinics had avoided procuring, storing, or dispensing controlled medications, relying instead on military treatment facilities for this responsibility.
On page 24 of the 80-page OIG report, it seems to show that cocaine hydrochloride was available to be dispensed.
This is only used generally for certain rhinoplasty procedures. Why would it even be there in the White House?
Provigil on the next page is a mild stimulant that’s not equivalent to meth or anything, but on the next line, we see what looks like 200 mg of liquid morphine dispensed. And on the line after that, 200 micrograms of fentanyl.
