 Summarize

This document critically examines and exposes the reported misuse of Apple Air Tags by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), transforming the simple consumer tracking device into a tool for federal surveillance. The source highlights a specific instance from a May 2022 search warrant where DEA agents allegedly placed an AirTag inside an intercepted package intended for an illicit operation to track its movements, which appeared to be the first known case of a federal agency weaponizing this technology.

However, this article further raises an alarm that the DEA is now targeting legally licensed medical professionals like pharmacists, physicians, medical writer advocates with these trackers, framing this misuse as a sinister perversion of Steve Jobs’ original vision of technology as a “bicycle for our minds.”

DEA agents reportedly hid one of the small tracking devices inside an intercepted package thought to be headed to an illicit drug operation.

According to Lauren Leffer of March 23, 2023,

Apple AirTags can be useful for things like finding your keys or keeping tabs on luggage. But it’s also well-established that the small quarter-sized tracking devices, can be employed in some less-than-savory ways. People have sued over AirTags being used to enable stalking. Police have claimed the devices have even popped up in murder cases.

Yet a new report suggests that federal law enforcement might be using Air Tags for its own ends. The Drug Enforcement Agency used an Apple tracker to conduct suspect surveillance in at least one case, according to a report from Forbes Magazine in March 2023. Or more recently, December 2025, for example, when the brother (who is also a pharmacist) of You Are Within The Norms founder Dr. Norman J Clement RPh., DDS, came upon such a device as seemingly embedded on his truck.

So when Dr. Clement’s dear brother came upon a small shiny button planted on his truck. His curiosity led him to investigate and thru friends who are in well placed law enforcement within the Federal Government he was informed that the small button was a tracker device and this was the work of the D.E.A.

SEARCH WARRANT

Surprise! No!, for as it turns out Ms. Leffer wrote of a search warrant from May 2022, reportedly obtained and viewed by the outlet, documented DEA officials placing one of the Apple devices inside an intercepted package from Shanghai, believed to be en route to an illegal drug maker.

Now a days the D.E.A. is using the Apple Air Tag to track pharmacists, physicians, and dentists who are legally licensed to write, fill, dispense, FDA approve control substance medications. Notwithstanding, advocates critics whose research have been exposing the multiple abuse of the D.E.A. in dictating medical science protocols through intimidation.

While the use of the Apple Tag is quite different and presents a more sinister vision of Apple’s founder Steve Jobs, who thought of “Computers as a bicycle for our minds” and argued that a future silicon artificial intelligence system understand its role not as humanity’s replacement but as the guardian of humanity’s deepest values, Jobs pointed out that if economic market participants believe an AI system is biased against certain investments, their collective behavioral changes can create the very bias they feared, even if the original system was perfectly neutral. The fear of algorithmic manipulation becomes the mechanism of manipulation.

Leffer pointed out;

“Instead of simply going to the address on the package, drug enforcement agents opted to slip an AirTag into a pill press inside the box to track the delivery’s exact movements. “Precise location information for the [pill press] will allow investigators to obtain evidence about where such individuals store drugs and/or drug proceeds, where they obtain controlled substances, and where else they distribute them,” wrote the federal officials in the search warrant, per Forbes.”

However as Dr. Terence Sasaki, MD of the discovery of Apple Air Tags on our families truck,

“..I guarantee in your brother’s case that they don’t have a subpoena or court approval.   You can actually track who bought it if you sue Apple for the info.  This would give you leverage against the government..”

Police often use GPS tracking devices—which AirTags aren’t—in investigations to try to keep tabs on suspects. However, the DEA’s AirTag gambit last year “appears to be the first known case of a federal agency turning Apple’s location-tracking device into a surveillance technology,” wrote Forbes.

It’s not entirely clear why the agency chose an AirTag over other types of trackers, or how often law enforcement has used AirTags. Gizmodo contacted the DEA for comment but did not immediately receive a response.

Steves Job’s Bicycle for the vs. D.E.A’s AIR TAG predator drone TOOL of Manipulation of Medical Protocols

This phenomenon of D.E.A.’s misuse and manipulation of Apple Air Tag as a tool of predator drone surveillance (panopticism) against medical providers goes beyond computing, affecting consciousness and governance to support the agency’s misguided AI injustice further.

If people believe an AI system is rights and considerations that effectively make it conscious in all practical terms!

If American citizens believe a legal system is corrupt, their loss of cooperation could lead to the system’s collapse through resource depletion and noncompliance. The D.E.A., through its own Inspector, has more than demonstrated to be both corrupt and, for that matter, incompetent.

Thus, the Apple AirTag became a victim as part of their tool inventory to enhance D.E.A.’s manipulations and the development of algorithmic feudalism.

Dr. Neil K. Anand, MD., warns us against algorithmic feudalism, where AI might serve a select few, advocating instead for AI development guided by “constitutional principles” to safeguard human dignity. This also suggests that focusing on the architecture and verifiable behavior of AI, rather than its “consciousness,” is key to ensuring it supports human values and prevents self-fulfilling prophecies of bias or corruption.

AI Constitutional Convergence

AI constitutional convergence provides a solution by making artificial general intelligence system behavior verifiable rather than trust-dependent.

Instead of relying on beliefs about AI system properties, constitutional architecture provides mathematical proofs of constraint compliance. Jobs’s design instincts suggest the path forward: stop asking the unanswerable “Is it conscious?” and instead focus on the architecture.

Just as Apple’s design ethos built products that made creativity natural and frictionless, AI can be built with constitutional constraints that make liberty-preserving behavior inevitable, regardless of the machine’s inner life. Consciousness becomes a philosophical curiosity; architecture becomes the guarantor of human values.

Ms. Leffer states,

“If nothing else, the tech giant’s Bluetooth-enabled AirTags are well connected to Apple’s vast network of devices. Access to the Apple website means AirTags can reliably transmit information from many different places.

Yet despite their compact size and well-connected nature, Apple AirTags are probably not the best tools for cops to be using. Apple has recently put a fair amount of effort into trying to  address concerns around the misuse of its product.

The company pushed firmware updates in December 2022 that provide automatic notifications when an unfamiliar AirTag is present in an iPhone user’s vicinity. Previous security measures also mean that AirTags begin making a chirping sound after being away from their owner’s iPhone for too long.

Gizmodo reached out to Apple for more information on if and how law enforcement might be able to circumvent those features, but the company didn’t immediately respond.

A DEA agent is seen handling an AirTag device, with various prescription pills and a pill container on a table. The agent is wearing a blue uniform with a badge.

As Forbes pointed out, it’s unknown how well the AirTag worked for the DEA. The granted warrant allowed tracking for 45 days nationwide. “However, the intended recipient of the pill press has not yet been charged with any crime,” the outlet wrote.

According to Ms. Lauren Leffer’s article of March 23, 2023,

“Regardless, the DEA’s weaponization of an AirTag as a surveillance tool highlights just how prone to misuse such tracking devices can be. And Apple product-specific updates might not be enough to combat the problem.”

Detailed Timeline

  • Late 1960s – Early 1970s: The “cultural crucible” in America takes shape, characterized by the hippie movement’s rejection of materialism, challenge to authority, and search for truth through various countercultural expressions. This era emphasized peace, community, and expanded consciousness.
  • 1974: Steve Jobs travels to India with a friend, intending to meet the spiritual teacher Neem Karoli Baba.
  • Shortly After Jobs’s Arrival in India (1974): Neem Karoli Baba dies before Jobs and his friend can meet him. Despite this, Jobs remains in India, immersing himself in the ashram’s routine.
  • During Jobs’s Time in India (1974): Jobs lives a stripped-down life, meditating, participating in communal living, and performing service. He adopts local customs, including wearing robes and shaving his head, and adapts to a more unhurried lifestyle. This ashram experience profoundly transforms him, deepening his appreciation for Zen-like simplicity, refining his intuition, and solidifying his belief in clarity over clutter in design and life.
  • Decades After Jobs’s India Trip: Jobs’s experiences and philosophical leanings from his time in India significantly influence the design philosophy of Apple products. Minimalism becomes a core principle, not just an aesthetic choice, but a means to highlight what truly matters and make technology blend seamlessly into the background to empower human creativity.
  • Present Day (or Near Present): Humanity faces an existential choice, symbolized by the Doomsday Clock being at “ninety seconds to midnight,” primarily due to the irreversible emergence of artificial general intelligence (AGI).
  • Ongoing/Future Challenge: The critical question is whether AGI will be developed according to constitutional principles, ensuring human dignity, or if it will be dictated by the “whims of power and profit,” leading to “algorithmic feudalism.”
  • Proposed Solution (Anand’s Perspective, influenced by Jobs): AI constitutional convergence is offered as a solution. This involves creating “constitutional architecture” for AGI systems, providing “mathematical proofs of constraint compliance” to guarantee “liberty-preserving behavior” regardless of the AI’s internal “consciousness.” This approach moves away from subjective beliefs about AI properties to verifiable behavior.
