The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) and the Jeffrey Epstein Controversy
1989-1998: Martin A. Nowak holds academic appointments at Oxford University. 1992: Jeffrey Epstein’s financial relationship with Harvard University begins, with university leaders seeking his philanthropic support. 1998-2003: Martin A. Nowak leads the first Initiative in Theoretical Biology at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. During this time, Epstein provides financial support for Nowak’s work. 1998-2007: Jeffrey Epstein makes significant gifts to Harvard University, totaling $9.179 million, before his 2008 conviction. 2003: * The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (PED) is formally established at Harvard University, stemming from an “imaginative proposal” by Jeffrey Epstein and Benedict Gross, overseen by Dean William Kirby. * A substantial $6.5 million gift from Jeffrey Epstein is instrumental in establishing PED and securing its dedicated research facility. * Martin A. Nowak is recruited by Harvard and assumes the role of Faculty Director of PED.

She also announces disciplinary actions against Professor Nowak, including a two-year ban on serving as a Principal Investigator on new grants, taking new advisees, and requiring existing graduate students to be co-advised.
