“The US Opioid Crisis — It’s Amazing How Much of What ‘Everybody Knows’ is Wrong”.
Almost everybody “knows’ that the US crisis in opioid overdose and addiction began with doctors over-prescribing pain relievers to their patients – and almost everybody is wrong. Data published by US CDC reveal that there is almost no cause and effect between prescribing versus drug overdoses. Recent “settlements” against big pharma companies are bogus as a three-dollar bill.
The US ‘war on drugs’ has been turned into a war against 50 million people in pain and their doctors — driving doctors out of practice and some patients into suicide, overwhelmed by untreated pain. I am one of those 50 million patients.
Doctors are being terrorized. About half of all US community practice clinics now refuse to accept new patients for pain management — though pain is the number one symptom that brings patients to a doctor. Many patients are being force-tapered off opioids that have been effective for years in promoting their quality of life. Patients are being sent home from major surgery with nothing more than Tylenol to control their pain. Dying patients in hospice sometimes face the same agony.
CDC medical practice guidelines written in 2016 and updated in a February 2022 draft are a major part of the disinformation now circulating on treatment of pain:
CDC chose known anti-opioid zealots to write their guidelines, with an agenda of forcing reductions in prescription of opioids. They both succeeded and failed. Prescribing rates have dropped over 40% since 2012, while overdose deaths from illegal opioids have more than doubled.
CDC guidelines have been turned into laws in over 35 US States, restricting opioid dose or duration to levels that are frequently ineffective in treating pain, driving some desperate patients into dangerous street drugs.
But the CDC guidelines are based on cherry-picked and misinterpreted research, gross over-exaggeration of addiction risks, and outright junk science. Some of these failings have been pointed out by a professional medical work group tasked by CDC.
Recent court decisions are helping turn the tide in favor of people in pain and their doctors.
State and County prosecutors have lost lawsuits against major pharmaceutical companies in California and Oklahoma.
The family of a patient who died of suicide after being refused treatment for pain have successfully sued a medical practice for millions in damages.
RUAN-KHAN VS. UNITED STATES DOJ-DEA
US Supreme Court has ruled that DEA and other law enforcement can no longer make up the law as they go along. To convict a doctor of prescribing outside usual and accepted practices, prosecutors must now prove that the doctor acted in bad faith, knowing the likely consequences of their actions.
Although the tide is turning, change is too slow to save many. What is desperately needed now is State and Federal legislation:
CDC must be forced to repudiate, withdraw, and not replace their fatally flawed opioid guidelines.
CDC must also actively call upon US States to repudiate their guidelines as references for local standards.
It is time to remove law enforcement from doctors’ offices and encourage the return of vitally needed clinicians to pain management practice.
I demand and expect that you will introduce or co-sponsor legislation to force CDC out of my life and the lives of competent medical doctors trying to help me survive.
