THE WORLD OF PAIN
BY WALTER F. WRENN, MD
A lot has been published about the addictive nature of opiate pain medications. Criminal charges against health care providers have been used both as punishment and a deterrent to the prescribing of opiate pain medications. Terms such as ” Over-Prescribing” and “Highly Addictive ” were introduced in the legal system although they have no medical definition.
A) Does opiate pain medication relieve pain?
B) How does an individual benefit from pain relief?
C) Do addicted individuals get pain relief from opiate pain medication?
To understand the tremendous benefits that an individual gets from opiate pain relief you need only look to the battlefield to realize that without opiate pain relief our soldiers would never have made it to the hospital and would have died on the battlefield.
The same is true of chronic pain patients. Pain relief allows individuals to function better. Many would-be disabled without opiate pain medications. With it, they are able to perform their activities of daily living.

Addicted individuals have injuries that require opiate pain medications just like nonaddicted individuals. Addicted individuals get relief from pain with opiate pain medication just like nonaddicted individuals.
It is amazing to me that opiate pain medications have been given a bad name when the benefits far outweigh the one side effect of addiction. Let’s stop demonizing this wonderful drug and depriving individuals of life-saving medications.
