It has come to my attention that thousands of comments submitted to the Federal Register on the recently circulated draft revised CDC Practice Guidelines for prescription of opioids have been extensively redacted to remove identifiable names from the text and to restrict public access to the original comments as submitted.
I see no rational or legal basis for this action. Those who have commented were afforded the opportunity to submit their input anonymously and their names continue to be readable from the public archive of their submissions.
However, the redaction process is so extreme as to remove the names of authors quoted in academic references of the comments themselves. Likewise, the redaction process has removed the names of the writers of the proposed guideline revision, despite the fact that author names are publicly available information.
I can only surmise that this action has been taken to protect the authors of the revised guidelines from public censure for their gross anti-opioid biases, cherry-picked and misinterpreted research, application of junk science, and wildly inaccurate and inappropriate assertions concerning risks versus benefits of long-term opioid therapy.
It is now well known that the CDC violated its own internal policies in the selection of guideline writers for both the 2016 and 2022 releases of this document. In consequence, it is clear that both Debra Houry and Roger Chou MD have profound professional and perhaps financial conflicts of interest that should have eliminated them from participation in the development of US National policy on the prescription of opioids.
I would appreciate a direct response to this correspondence at your earliest convenience but in no event later than 30 April 2022.
